Ignorance about Nepal lands Bengal tourists in soup

KATHMANDU: Ignorance about Nepal's difficult topography and customs landed four tourists from West Bengal in sore plight in Nepal, turning their trekking holiday into a nightmare.

Debasish Saha, 36, who runs a stationery shop in Ranaghat in Nadia, Swarup Saha, 27, a typist, Prabhat Ghosh, 35, and Anirban Pal Chowdhury, 28, faced suspicions of murder after the porter they had hired to go trekking to Gosainkund, a religious destination in Rasuwa district at an altitude of about 4380m from sea level, died due to high-altitude breathing difficulties at midnight.

Yubaraj Basnet, the 24-year-old porter hired by the four in Rasuwa, died on Oct 23 midnight at the Higniti Hotel in Nuwakot district, police inspector Prabin Pokhrel told TNN. Following the young man's death, his relatives began demanding compensation from the four Indians, who also fell under the suspicion of foul play.

"It was not a wise idea to have gone off trekking to that area without familiarising themselves with the situation," said A K Roy, first secretary at the consular section of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. "They chose a remote, inaccessible area where food and medical facilities are virtually non-existent. Also, their porter was unwell from the very start of the journey, suffering from breathing difficulties." - The Times of India
